Personality: Younger brother to Reiji Akaba, Reira is both alike and completely unlike the elder of the Akaba boys by far. What they share beyond physical traits is little; but it is enough. Highly intelligent, a heavy amount of expectations have been placed on him despite his age; as a student of LDS, he's become known as the 'gem of LDS' (being directly referred to as such)--a celebrated and powerful result of their classes--and beyond this, he is by far the youngest member of the Lancers Defense Selection, with all others of the 9-man team being between the ages of 14 and 16. Despite this strength however, it seems as if the path there has been relatively devoid of support outside his brother; he observes the sight of other children being cheered on and even encouraged after their loss, with a distant and perhaps even confused stare. It's a clearly foreign sight to him, one which he quickly turns away from at that time.

It can be difficult to gauge Reira's emotions with that in mind; though he speaks clearer and stronger when serious--something he seems to rarely do at all--his demeanor is typically very quiet and subdued. His words come slowly, and even hesitantly (with his words audibly coming across as such, and the translations of them being constantly filled with elipses and pauses). During duel chants and duels themselves he reacts just as minimally, even in combination with that stronger voice. His words are monotonous, and his expression almost permanently wide-eyed and blank. During a duel, very little if anything seems to phase him either--a likely product of constant training in LDS, along with the expectations of his mother and brother. Outside a duel, he's simply quiet; he scarcely vocalizes beyond short sounds (such as when he gestured to the collapsing Solid Vision Wall during Yuuya's duel against Security), restricting himself to stares and cries of alarm; the most he asks during this particular moment in fact is 'where's my brother?', and to even claim he utilizes gestures ordinarily would be somewhat false. Beyond his point toward the wall after all, he made no such motions.

Because of the subtleties of his emotions, it becomes very evident when he experiences them strongly--the key word being 'when'. When he smiles, it has so far been entirely restricted to events regarding his brother; he smiles and breathes with relief at contact with and encouragement from him after winning a duel--and even thanks the boy he defeats in the final championship duel after said boy compares him to Reiji, a comment to which Reira quietly says '...thanks' in response to. In contrast to this, he gave no response at all to an earlier comment from the same boy, regarding his fusion summoning skill; considering how many other adults have already regarded him as best of the best (News reporter on his debut, his own mother), it's clear that such comments are considered more typical, expected, if anything after all.

If there is one aspect of his personality that can be seen most clearly from the rest, it is his fear--something that is observed almost immediately by the main cast upon his debut. A state he seems to almost perpetually be in, Reira carries his teddybear constantly as security toward this. He is seen clutching it closely when his mother grabs his shoulder while bragging about how she's certain her son will win his next match, and only puts it down for a due--or rather, hands it to someone else without comment, expecting them to take it instead (this point alone outs him as a rather direct child when it comes to interactions, but he otherwise prefers minimum interaction, noted by how often in recent episodes he's simply sat off to the side in silence). When witnessing the crowds of the opening ceremonies for the tournament, as well as when in the presence of those who seem angry, Reira squeezes it tightly with both arms--expressions of clear terror over his face in these moments, his grip on the bear firm and unbreaking (he's been pulled around a fair bit with this thing still held close, though there is more to that below, as it was a more extreme case.)

This fear amplifies without the presence of his brother, as seen in more recent events. In both of the prior examples, Reiji is with him, albeit sitting and minding his own business. When he appears in Synchro without him however, his first instinct is to run from what danger appears, crying aloud in terror. His responses to when Yuuya (who of course is present) attempts to comfort him, are minimal at best. Yuuya's entertainment techniques are met with confusion and uncertainity, and while he obeys the other's request to 'hold tight' (with them riding on Yuuya's hippo in that moment), it is evident that Yuuya does not succeed in calming Reira down more than a fraction. While the boy clings to him in fear during those moments, and does indeed remain relatively close sometime after, he withdraws as soon as the danger has passed, again holding his bear close and his mouth shut. His comfort levels around Yuuya are thus truly 'minimal', even if it is a clear difference between the teen and the remaining people around--Reira still needs a nudge to be pulled to attention (Though this is more connected to his habit of staring off in thought), and still remains mostly silent in the other's presence when outside a moment of panic. He simply happens to tolerate more of that 'presence', and, perhaps, now carry awareness that Yuuya at least is someone he can hide behind if danger comes again.

Overall Reira seems to be a very shy, withdrawn child; he idolizes his elder brother, to the point that at the very mention of searching for him, he brightens enough to blindly follow for a way to him...and likewise, whimpers and quietly whines when restained from that possible reunion (as seen when Yuuya himself held the boy back for his own safety, after Reira attempted to follow Serena and Sawatari to find the man). His dependence on him is unmistakeable, leaving him desperate and skittish without the brother there. When it comes to himself, Reira reacts heavily to the comments other make about him as well, not wanting to be seen or watched--when he is first introduced to the Lancers and met with comments of incredulity (largely being statements concerning his age, and how it would 'hold the others back'), he voices no defense for himself, and even turns away in clear discomfort, trying to 'shut them out'. While this is also reflected in his monotonous, depressive voice however, this also means that any emotions he does display beyond it are immediately evident. He's frightened by conflict certainly (or at the least, the idea of capture, considering Security's statements for arrest immediately preceeded his mad dash away and into a wall), and perhaps even by expectations placed on him; during the start of his first duel it is obvious that he is uncomfortable with being there, and he does not even begin his match until catching sight of his mother mouthing an unknown statement from a window--a sight met with fear and widening eyes before he gets to it. (In contrast of course, both the sight of a 'CC' card, an archetype similar to his brother's 'DD' in naming convention, as well as the connected motion to search for his brother in the window and realize the other's presence, are what spur him to duel seriously, showing the clear gap between his perceptions of his brother compared to all others in that moment.)

This combination of traits leaves him confused about the bonds between others and their friends, and especially about the idea of encouragement or happiness in the face of a loss; such things are what he has regarded with blank staring from afar after all, both after his duel, and even during it. Confusion aside though, these are things he clearly gives much thought toward; at the very least, combined with the many observations his brother has had him sit in on (key of which being duels concerning those of other dimensions), he is viewed as being capable of giving deeper thought into situations--his brother clearly holds his strength in high regard (even stating aloud that he considers the boy of equal strength to the other Lancers), and tells him to in particular observe a duel between duelists of Fusion and Xyz closely, as the 'fate of the world' itself rests upon it. Outside the statements of others, we have his very path of sight--the most noted being his stare to his brother's hands when a duelist on the screen they observe explains (brags about, really) the violent nature of the Fusion dimension. Reiji's hands tightened in their fold and trembled; a sight which Reira did not at all miss, and in fact stared at for some time, clearly taking the response into consideration.

Close as he is to his brother, separation does not become him. While he does at least seem slightly more open to other people, most obviously Yuuya thanks to the attack from Security, he does not tend to approach anyone on his own, and if anything is more inclined to curl into a ball off to the side to be alone with his bear. Being willing to be near and hold onto Yuuya is clearly not something that comes hand in hand with trust; not when each of Yuuya's dueling techniques are met with his questioning stare. This is a child who is asocial to a fault, drawing responses of confusion from others around them early on (in particular, the children he dueled in his first two matches viewed him as being weird), and otherwise fading from view when allowed (noted particularly by his background-sitting in recent episodes)...

However, given how little people have been letting him do that in most recent episodes (key being not only Yuuya, but also 'Amanda', a young girl living with Crow, the man who rescued the group and let them into his home), it's evident at least that he'll at least slightly begin to open up to others.

...Even if 'opening up' simply means displaying more than neutrality in their presence.
